The classic Zenit-E is a 35mm film SLR made by KMZ in Russia, and a favourite 'First SLR' for millions of photographers all around the World, thanks to its very low retail price
It was produced between 1965-86 - over 20 years - with manufacturing reaching a staggering 3 million units made.
The Russian word Зенит (or Zenit) means Zenith, a point in the sky that appears directly above the observer.
The Zenit E is a camera that requires dedication and a good knowledge of camera functionality. It has a battery-free selenium meter without any coupling to the aperture or shutter speed settings. It also does not have aperture automation, and therefore must be used with manual diaphragm/preset lenses or auto diaphragm lenses with an auto/manual switch.
The lens on the front is a Russian-made Helios 58mm f2 standard lens, just four uncoated elements of polished optical glass with an optical design blatently stolen from Zeiss of Germany, but universally acclaimed as one of the sharpest optics ever made - get the exposure settings and focus just right and this camera is capable of delivering superb results
The condition of this one is so good that we'd almost describe it as near-pristine, which includes the lens and the excellent leather case - we've also had it serviced, so it will carry a 12-month warranty
