Chiang Mai Town Accomodation Things To Do The second biggest city in Thailand after Bangkok. However Chiang Mai is much more friendly and laid back. There is a large ex-pat community here. I have often heard that the night market is the cheapest place in Thailand - it is no cheaper than Bangkok's weekend market. Chiang Mai is a good place to go and get pissed - which we did and also store your large bags while you explore the areas in North Thailand. If you have a week or so, I would recommend not booking trekking tours etc here and just take buses to the other towns in the north and do trekking etc as and when you come across it. 5 of us (Me, Lucy, Dave, Lisa, Brooke) decided to hire a 4 wheel drive (named Viera) for a week (600 baht per day hired from a place down the road to the night market with the go-go bars and the hard rock cafe). This enabled us to explore everywhere we wanted when we wanted. We ardly saw any farang for the whole week and went to small hill tribe villages where it looked like they had hardly seen farang. It was definately the right decision as I think we saw more off the beaten track in a week than most people see and it was all for a fraction of the cost of doing a 2-3 day tour. However after our week of doing our own thing, we came back to get our bags and to spend one more night and they said that they were full. It is quite likely they didn't want us to stay because we hadn't done one of their tours. They will also tell you what suits them in regards of places to go e.g. they said Chiang Rai was no good - we went and there are alot of nice places (it is only because they do not operate tours in Chiang Rai) Accomodation Name New Saiturn Guesthouse Tel Email Price 120 baht per room with bathroom (big enough double bed for 2 or 3) Good Points Cheap, Friendly Bad Points Bit rundown Rating 6.5/10 Comments Not as nice as 5 Stars, but still good value. Things To Do Night Market / Thai Boxing / Drinking / Temples Unless you have loads of time just spend 1 or 2 days here and get out to the unspoilt places in the rest of Northern Thailand.
