Pai
Town Accomodation Things To Do

Although still fairly small, it was the biggest town we came across in a week and also had the most farang we had seen in a week. This is due to most of the trekking tours in Chiang Mai being directed here - which is exactly why we didn't want to do that.

Stayed one night and din't have a great deal of time to explore the town, but seemed pleasant enough and also had quite a few place to drink with other farang.

On the way there we managed to do the last 50 or so kms of our journey on an empty tank thinking we would have to spend the night stranded on the road in the jungle.... we also saw a huge python on the way, must have been about 4 metere - it had just got into the grass before I could get a photo of the rest of its body and head!

Comments Were recommended this place from Chiang Mai, but decided to try a place closer to the town center - had no luck.

In the end we were very happy to have found Gasalong, the staff were very friendly and the whole layout of the plce was perfect, right on the river.

There was always a fire going on the river edge and hamocks situated around the grounds. A very good place to relax.

It is located off a turning about 3kms on the Pai to Chiang Mai road on the left as you are going towards Chiang Mai, look out for a small sign.

Things To Do

Elephant Trekking - 450 baht (2 hours)

Absolute quality! One of the best things I have done and the same went for Dave.

The first hour entailed bare back riding the elephant through the forest which was nice, but a bit un comfortable.

The second hour we went down to th river where we played with the elephant - the elephant totally submerging under the water with us on top. We were able to comand the eephant if we wanted him to lay down or squirt us with water.

A totally enjoyable experience and also the guide was having a right laugh and the elephant seemed very happy to keep trying to dunk us!

The trip ended up lasting for quite a bit over 2 hours and when we got back there was a hot spa waiting which was all included in the price.

Having spoken to many other travellers about their elephant treks, this seemed to have alot more.

Caves - 40 baht per person

About 1.5 hours drive out of Pai. When we went only 1 cave was open as flooding has completely wiped out the bridge to the other caves (the price was still the same though).

A guide is reqired and also you have to get a small boat to go into the cave. Inside it is pretty nice with some good formations, all of which have names from the guide such as - flying saucer, boobs, ogre, waterfall etc etc ( some evn look slightly like thier name!)

I would say only do this if you haven't seen caves before, are really into caves or if you have spare time.
