National Park has an active volcanoe and Mt Ruepehu (the largest in the North Island & great for snowboarding). We didn't really stay long enough to explore the area much but there were quite alot of walking / mountain biking tracks.

Very large resort, however we got there right at the end of the snow season so the bottom half had not much snow. Still a few quality days up there though.
