Magnetic Island
Town Accomodation Things To Do

Magnetic Island is situated just off the coast. To get there you get a Sunferry from Townsville for approx $30 return.

We hired out a Mini Moke for a day for $70 - perfect for the Island as it is so small and warm (see pics below).

You cannot swim in the sea due to the stingers unless you wear a special suit which costs $10 to hire for the day. A couple of the beaches have stinger nets which you can swim fairly safely in - the nets can still let through small stingers.

The Island also has the best sunsets we have seen yet!

Things To Do

Snorkelling

You can snorkel off most of the beaches, but it is not very good. Loads of sea grass covering the coral and not many fish.

Diving

Magnetic Island is home to the best Wreck Dive in Australia and top ten site in the world - The Yongala Wreck (for experienced divers only - costs $175).

You can also get your PADI divers certificate for only $215 with The Dive Shack

The place is run by a bunch of really good experienced guys and it is also the cheapest place on the East Cost. Highly recommended.

The actually quality of the dives was not amazing, but at the end of the course you get a free dive to go off with another person who has qualified. It is a good place to get your certificate before you get up to the Barrier Reef (where it can cost $400 for the same course)
