Located 2 hours West of Bangkok and costs 100 baht to get there by mini bus.
It is a pretty chilled out town situated on the river, it is a good place to go few a few days to relax and is also very cheap.
There are plenty of things to go and see in the area - we hired motorbikes for 130baht per day and saw everything when the tour groups weren't there and it cost us alot less - recommend doing this, all the road are very good condition.
Kanchanaburi is home to the 'Bridge Over The River Kwai' famous from the war when thousands of prisoners of war died at the hands of the Japanese.

Very cheap for a large room sitting right on the river. All rooms are on stilts with walkways between them to get to the restaurant.
Old bloke gave me a ride on his motorbike for free to the internet cafe and also the tourist police - top man

Waterfalls - Erawan Falls - 200 baht (100baht with student card), other falls free
|
Probably the best falls I have been to. Erawan falls is a 7 tiers set of waterfalls with a track which takes you right up to the top one.
We arrived early and there was no one about at all. The water was crystal clear and the whole place was beautiful.

Tiger Temple - 150baht
|
This place is run by Budhist Monks who have brought the tigers from the wild if they were injured etc and have made them tame.
It is possible to go and stroke the tigers and have your photo taken with them - they are not drugged in any way.
When we were there the tour group left leaving just me and Dave so we got much longer to interact with tigers.
Was really good and would definately recommend it - although if you are on a tour, it make seem like you are on a conveyor belt a bit with the taking of photos.

Ride The Death Railway - 17baht
|
We just managed to fit this in before we left and glad we did it as we had already been to the museums finding out all about the terrible things that happened here during the war.
The price structure is slightly strange, if you go at 6am it costs 17baht, 1:30pm costs 100baht and 4:30pm costs 17baht - we went on it for sunrise.
