Great Keppel Island although the name doesn't sound too inspiring, was the best place we have been in Australia.
The Island is only approx 4kms long and is made up of mainly forest and beaches with the main beach being where all the resorts are.
The Island has a couple of bar / clubs and a few restaurants. However if you want to get away from the tourists this is just as easy with walking tracks all over the island.

The best place we stayed so far. The staff were so accomodation that when all the dorm beds were full, they put a girl in a double cabin for the same price for the night.
The staff also knew everyone by name and sat and had BBQ with us and were alround very nice people.
Also plenty of wildlife coming through the site - goannas, lorikeets, possums etc
Worth spending an extra few dollars than normal for the extras.

Snorkelling
|
Absolutely fantastic for snorkelling straight from the beaches over the fringing coral.
Shelving Beach is good all the time, you can often see stingrays on the outer edge of the reef and wobbegong sharks (harmless).
Monkey Beach is excellent at low tide and generally has larger fish, also has sting rays and the occasional turtle. Alo Monkey beach is a beautiful beach just to relax on and very un-crowded (max 4 people usually)
Long Beach has no coral but is a nice long beach although more windy that the sheltered Monkey Beach.
