Dubbed as the 'Little Switzerland' of Thailand, Doi Ang Khang has a temperature of between 9ºC and 22ºC most days. It is set in amongst mountains, hills and valleys with alot of greenery everywhere.
Inside the Royal Reserve (30baht to enter) are some beautiful gardens and buildings which all seem to go well together and you can start to see why it is called 'Little Switzerland'. There is a nice Clubhouse and Restaurant which look fairly classy, but are actually very cheap for food and beer - obviously because not too many westerners come and the place is for Thai tourists.
Although the area is extremely well looked after and seems to be geared for tourists, almost all the signs are in Thai, all the people are Thai, all restaurant menus are Thai and no-one speaks a word of English! I didn't see another westerner for my whole time stay here which was quite nice fr a change.
Also I forgot my Thai phrase book - so the similest things were made extremely difficult with no one I met knowing any more english than the word 'hello' - this made conversations very interesting as neither me nor the Thai's had a clue what was being said, the Thai's found this hilarious - and so did I!
If you walk right through the reserve and take the road up the hill to the left of Garden Eighty keep walking for 1-2kms, then when you get to the road junction turn right and walk for about 1km and you will reach a nice view point where you can see right across Fang.
Definately a place to stop on the way. I stayed longer than expected mainly due to the guesthouse being so nice, the climate and just the relaxed feel to the place.

One of the best rooms I have had in Thailand. Very Large and spacious with a desk, 2 double beds, bathroom on suite and a great bargain for 150 baht. Rooms for 400 baht are higher up with a better view and sleep more people.
The restaurant menu is totally in Thai and the staff speak very little english. I had some very funny conversations with them and to order food had to start miming what the food was i.e. an impression of a chicken and then making a round shape with my hands to get an egg for breakfast. I tried to describe bread to them and they came back with a bag of chopped pork!
After about a 15 minute conversation they brought out fried rice with egg and soup, they also have a wicked sound system in the restaurant, so I sat eating my breakfast listening to my Massive Attack CD...

However most of the signs in the area are in Thai. I didn't see a mountain bike for rent place. There is a very small tourist information centre by the entrance to the Royal Nature Reserve, but it was shut on Sunday when I went.
If you go right through the Royal Nature Reserve and go up the road to the left of Garden Eighty walk for 1-2kms and then turn left at the junction and walk for another 1km and you will reach the small village Nor Lae where the Palong people migrated from Burma to in 1984.
An excellent view of Burma can bee seen if you go through the village and up the hill to the Thai Border Soldier Station (guarded by soldiers with semi automatic rifles). Also continue on the road through the village for another 500 meters and climb up another hill to the Burmese Soldiers Post for even better views (you will actually be standing in Burma now with Burma in the valley on one side and a view of Fang in Thailand on the other side!)
