Only stopped here for one night. Seemed fairly busy and a good place to stop for anything if you are heading North.
We were told in Chiang Mai not to bother with this place by the tour agents there - because none of their tour offices are here...
We ended up going to the Akha Hill House on recommendation just outside Chiang Rai (see below) and it was probably the best place we went in the whole week.

Akha Hill House - 60baht per person per night

Definately recommended. Akha Hill House is about 16kms from Chiang Rai. They have an office in Chiang Rai and will pick up from there for free everyday at 4:30.
We drove our 4WD up there in the dark on the very dodgy road. One section had a make-shift bridge which if the wheels weren't lined up to properly, we would certainly crash down into the hole. Was good fun driving though!
We woke up there next morning with an amazing view from our rooms across the valley and hills. The restayrant sits on stilts on the hill so the view is excellent all round.
There are plenty of self-guided treks to do in the area and there is a waterfall just a 10 min walk away from the guest house.
We decided to do a trek which would pass through a couple of the other local tribes villages, however when we thought we were nearly back we had actually taken a wrong turn and had added almost 10kms onto the trip. It ended up being 30kms - hard work at the end but well worth it. We went into little villages which looked like they hardly saw western people. Unlike others where they are ready with the bracelets to sell, these people were just getting on with their simple way of life.
We saw some great scenery along the way, a small snake and was nice being really in with nature and off the beaten track.
The place is run by local people and was set up as a project to enable the kids to get a better education and to further te well being of the people in the village.
They also offer massages - a bargain at 100baht per hour!
