Got to Broome in the wet season, so the town was pretty quiet. It was really smalleven though it is the biggest town on the coast since Perth. Still quite a few backpackers going through though.
I stayed for about 3 weeks as I was doing various work there, but if you weren't working I would say you would get pretty bored after 3 or 4 days.
I actually stayed near Cable Beach which is about 3-4 kms from Broome town centre but really easy to get back to town. Also Cable Beach had the best sunsets I have ever seen (see below). Almost every night we went down to see the sunset before going out.
There are some good markets on the weekend, which were pretty small while I was there, but inhigh season are supposed to be quite busy.
If you are looking to get work on a pearl boat, this is a good place to start, the pay is about $1000 a week and all food and board is included. I would have done this, but a working visa is essential.

Really good backpackers and pretty cheap. Make sure you ask for the largets dorm they have as they usually try and put you in a 4 bed dorm which is more expensive.
Free popcorn with a movie once or twice a week was a nice touch. Also free rice evry other day. Once a week there is a free sausage sizzle with pretty much as much as you can eat.

Work on a Banana Farm - WOOF
|
There is an organisation in Australia called WOOF - which stands for Willing Workers on Organic Farms.Basically you work for 4-5 hrs a day in return for accomodation and food.
Christian and I decided to do this for a few days to save some money and worked on an organic banana farm.
It was in all a good experience and the work was hard but good. We mainly had to trach the banana trees (cut away all the dead leaves and keep a nicecanopy) with machettes.
However, the accomodation was in a small run down caravan out the backwith holes in the mosquito netting so you got bitten to shit every night. The toilet was clean, but outside and the food provided wasn't really enough after a few hours of hard work. The family were quite hard up, but even then the lady would give her husband and children more food than us and also extra things like yoghurts etc which we were never offered. The family didn't believe in eating bread or drinking milk, so breakfast consisted of only fruit which really wasn't enough to go out and start work on!
One day we got up slightly later than usual and were still going to do our5 hrs, but Steve the 'Boss' got pissed off that we hadn't started at 7 on the dot and had a go at us.
It was a good experience, but the people seemed to take the piss a bit and not be very comprimising. If they had paid someone to do the work we were doing it would have cost them about $150 a day. That said they were generally friendly and had two really cool kids.

Work - Plaster Boarding New Houses
|
I decided to leave the banana farm as really it was just wasting time, and I went round a big new housing development asking everyone if they had any cash work. One guy said yes and ended up fitting plater board into new houses.
Murray was really good to work with and the rest of the guys and the money was alright too. Only managed to save about $300 as most of it in the one night club in Broome.
Dropped some concrete plater board on my foot one day which hurt like f*ck! Think I fractured a couple of toes....
