Things To Do
|
The Bay of Islands is a superb place to go. The best place in the North Island.
There are loads of wicked beaches to go to and if you had a boat you would be free to go to any of the islands most of which no one would be on.

Hole in the Rock on the 'Excitor'
|
The 'Excitor' is basically a large speed boat which we got on to go out to check out the hole in the rock. I was a pretty good trip, we had really nice weather and even then there were some pretty big bumps.

Onapukapuka Island
|
On the way back from the Hole in the Rock we stopped at Onapukapuka Island for the night. We walked round the whole Island in about 4 hours and saw some really nice beaches and views. The Island is so un-commercial and the beaches empty, most of the time there were fish jumping up out of the water.

Cape Reinga - 90 Mile Beach
|
This was an all day coach trip. Driving along 90 mile beach was wicked. We stopped at one point to have a look at the top of a car sticking out of the sand - 2 English backpackers had driven along and stalled and before they could do anything their car was stuck. The picture below shows the car 3 months after it happened.
We also went past a hiker who was walking the whole way along 90 mile beach!
Then the coach drove up a river to the sand dunes for a bit of sand boarding and the Mauri driver said that if we had stopped for a few seconds there is no way we would get the coach out. Sand boarding was wicked, apart from climbing up the dune with sand blowing so hard at you you could hardly stand.
Cape Reinga was pretty good as you can stand at the end of the penisula and see the Pacific Ocean meet the Tasman Sea - one of the few places on earth you can see this.

We had to go in here because it was in our TNT guide. They also do wicked chocolate cake.
